A study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of hydrocortisone aceponate 0.127% lipophilic cream in steroid responsive dermatoses in Indian patients - Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology
Mukhopadhyay AK et al. – The study showed that hydrocortisone aceponate (0.127%) lipophilic cream is an effective therapeutic agent with a very good safety profile in various steroid responsive dermatoses in the Indian patient population....
The effect of infliximab plus methotrexate on the modulation of inflammatory disease markers in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: analyses from a randomized, placebo-controlled trial - Pediatric Rheumatology
Visvanathan S et al. – Infliximab + MTX attenuated several inflammatory markers in patients with JIA; larger decreases in ICAM–1, MMP–3, and CRP levels were observed in ACR–Pedi–30 responders versus nonresponders....
Reuse of Nevirapine in Exposed HIV-Infected Children After Protease Inhibitor–Based Viral Suppression - JAMA
Coovadia A et al. – Among HIV–infected children previously exposed to nevirapine, switching to nevirapine–based therapy after achieving viral suppression with a ritonavir–boosted lopinavir regimen resulted in lower rates of viremia greater than 50 copies/mL than maintaining the primary ritonavir–boosted lopinavir regimen....
Hepatitis C: viral and host factors associated with non-response to pegylated interferon plus ribavirin - Liver International
Asselah T et al. – The future of HCV treatment would probably consist in the addition of specifically targeted antiviral therapy for HCV such as protease and/or polymerase inhibitors to the SOC. In genotype 1 patients, very promising results have been reported when the protease inhibitor telaprevir or boceprevir is added to the SOC. It increases the SVR rates from approximately 50% (PEG–IFN plus ribavirin) to 70% (for patients treated with a combination of PEG–IFN plus ribavirin plus telaprevir)....
Pharmacological Therapies for Osteoarthritis of the Hand: A Review of the Evidence - Drugs & Aging
Altman RD – Pharmacological approaches have included several oral therapies, such as paracetamol (acetaminophen), oral nonsteroidal anti–inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioids, all of which carry a risk of adverse events that typically increases with age. Topical NSAIDs, recently approved in the US, appear to provide efficacy similar to that of oral NSAIDs for hand OA, with less systemic NSAID exposure. Intra–articular corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid have also shown modest symptomatic efficacy with generally good tolerability. Two proposed disease–modifying therapies, chondroitin sulfate and hydroxychloroquine, have had unclear effects on disease modification in clinical trials. This review of pharmacotherapies for the treatment of hand OA focuses on their efficacy and safety in elderly patients....
Stress-related mucosal disease: Incidence of bleeding and the role of omeprazole in its prophylaxis - European Journal of Internal Medicine
Amaral MC et al. – In patients admitted to an internal medicine ward, incidence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding as a complication of stress–related mucosal disease is low. The authors found that there is no advantage in prophylaxis with omeprazole....
The addition of pioglitazone in type 2 diabetics poorly controlled on insulin therapy: A meta-analysis - European Journal of Internal Medicine
Tan A et al. – This study implied that in patients with type 2 DM whose control is inadequate on insulin therapy, the additional pioglitazone could significantly improve glucose metabolism and might have a positive effect on important components of the lipid profile, which may have important implications in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, a major long–term complication in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Besides, the adverse events were well tolerated....
Onset of action of indacaterol in patients with COPD: Comparison with salbutamol and salmeterol-fluticasone - International Journal of COPD
Balint B et al. – Single doses of indacaterol 150 and 300 mug demonstrated a fast onset of action similar to that for salbutamol and faster than that for salmeterol–fluticasone....
A one-year trial of tiotropium Respimat plus usual therapy in COPD patients - Respiratory Medicine
Bateman ED et al. – Lung function, exacerbations and quality of life were improved by tiotropium 5 mug Respimat but a numerical imbalance was seen in all–cause mortality....
Clinical, power Doppler sonography and histological assessment of the psoriatic plaque: short-term monitoring in patients treated with etanercept - British Journal of Dermatology
Gutierrez M et al. – These results show a significant correlation between PDS findings and both PASI score and histological degree of vascularisation before and after etanercept treatment. These data provide evidence in favour of the validity of power Doppler sonography in the assessment of dermal perfusional changes in patients with psoriatic plaques....
